Tempe, known for its vibrant community and commitment to sustainability, will unveil several new infrastructure projects on September 20. The initiatives aim to improve the city’s bike and pedestrian pathways, making Tempe even more welcoming for residents. Community members are invited to join city leaders and participating artists at various sites across Tempe for the morning’s celebrations, which will include light refreshments.
The celebration will showcase both the practical benefits of the new pathways and the creative contributions of public art installations, each designed by local artists. According to the City of Tempe, these artworks add vibrant visual appeal to the improved infrastructure, celebrating local talent and enhancing communal spaces.
Among the artists being recognized, coLAB Studio—led by Tempe-based Matthew and Maria Salenger—is celebrated for blending art and architecture. Their I-10 bridges exemplify this approach, weaving sunlight and shadow into the design. Bobby Zokaites, noted for his whimsical, larger-than-life interactive sculptures, has brought a playful touch to Country Club Way, sure to delight passersby of all ages. Meanwhile, Oliverio Balcells, a versatile artist inspired by Mesoamerican heritage and skilled across diverse mediums, has infused Smith Road with his distinctive vision, as per the City of Tempe.
