In a recent announcement, Texas Governor Greg Abbott revealed the awarding of over $2.4 million in grants to several veteran service organizations in the West Texas and El Paso areas. The funds, part of the Funds for Veterans' Assistance (FVA) program, are distributed by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) and are set to benefit more than 2,000 veterans and their families across 28 counties. In a statement delivered at the El Paso County Courthouse, the governor expressed Texas's enduring gratitude towards its veterans, stating, "Texans are forever indebted to our brave veterans who selflessly answered the call to serve in our nation’s military. These Fund for Veterans' Assistance grants will provide our nation's heroes and their families access to crucial services such as housing and financial assistance so they can thrive in El Paso and West Texas."

A spectrum of organizations will receive these grants to support an array of services crucial for veteran welfare. Project Amistad is slated to get $300,000 for financial and clinical counseling services, while The Salvation Army in El Paso will utilize its $150,000 for aiding homeless veterans. Other recipients include the Child Crisis Center of El Paso, the City of El Paso, El Paso County, Jeff Davis County, and the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) El Paso del Norte Region. As reported by gov.texas.gov, the funds will cover a wide range of services, including but not limited to transportation, legal services, family support, home modifications, as well as rental and mortgage assistance.
These FVA grants form part of a larger commitment by Abbott's administration, which announced a record-breaking $46.3 million in over 200 grants to 175 organizations earlier in May. This comprehensive support, as released by the Office of the Texas Governor, is projected to directly serve nearly 40,000 veterans, including their dependents and surviving spouses. According to the Texas Veterans Commission, since 2009 through the ongoing 2025-2026 grant cycle, the state has issued more than $359 million in grant funding through over 1,600 FVA grants.
Revenue for these grants is largely sourced from the Texas Lottery’s veteran-support-designated games, with additional donations collected through vehicle registrations and hunting or fishing license transactions. For veterans seeking assistance, the TVC provides a directory of helping organizations via their website, where veterans can find resources and relevant contact information in their local area. According to the Office of the Texas Governor, Director of Veteran Services and Army veteran Chip Osborne thanked the organizations, saying, "Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in the lives of those who served." Osborne's words serve as a reminder of the community's effort to give back to those who have given so much for their country.
