Texas Governor Greg Abbott has made it known that over $1.4 million in grants will go to various veteran service organizations within the Panhandle, a move that promises enhanced support for over 520 veterans and their families scattered across 60 counties, as reported by the Texas Governor's Office. These grants, part of a campaign determined by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), aim to shore up much-needed resources such as home modifications, financial aid, and clinical counseling, among others.
"In Texas, we care about the well-being of our veterans," Abbott said, as reported by Office of the Texas Governor, highlighting the state's commitment to ensuring those who have served the nation could lead fulfilling lives post-service while too addressing the challenges they face in the less urbanized expanses of the Panhandle; the TVC Commissioner and Marine veteran Mike Hernandez echoed these sentiments, underscoring the importance of accessibility to resources for those living in rural areas. During a presentation at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial in Amarillo, Hernandez handed out the sizable grants to organizations like Panhandle Community Services and Refuge Services, Inc.
The comprehensive list of grant recipients specified included Panhandle Community Services, which received $800,000 divided between financial assistance and Housing for Texas Heroes; Refuge Services, Inc., with $200,000 earmarked for clinical counseling; and additional funds designated for entities like Potter County, Hale County Meals on Wheels, Lubbock County, the Lubbock Regional MHMR Center, and Rusted and Weathered, Inc. These organizations represent just a fraction of those positively impacted by the TVC's fund distribution effort, which has seen a record-breaking $46.3 million in grants disseminated statewide, according to the earlier announcement in May.
Since its inception in 2009, the Funds for Veterans’ Assistance program has allocated over $359 million through an excess of 1,600 grants as of the current 2025-2026 cycle, the Texas Governor's Office detailed; these grants have supported veterans via a plethora of services, including but not limited to legal and family support services, home modification, and help with rent and mortgages. Veterans in Texas looking for assistance can turn to the TVC's website, where a directory of organizations and contact information is readily accessible.
Funding for these impactful grants is sourced largely from the Texas Lottery’s veteran-themed games, supplemented by donations collected through vehicle registrations and fishing and hunting license purchases. This multifaceted approach to generating financial support exemplifies Texas' ongoing commitment to honoring and aiding its veterans and their families.
