In a disturbing turn of events this past Sunday, two individuals were identified among the three fatalities in what appears to have been an attempted robbery turned deadly at Carmichael's Lance Apartments. According to ABC10, Zavion Larue Dorsey, 22, and Wayne Douglas Doerr, 24, were the victims whose lives were ended in the violence that erupted around 7 a.m. along El Camino Avenue.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office detailed that, killed by one of the men allegedly being robbed, a third man in his 20s was found dead at the scene but has not yet been named. Arrested on suspicion of illegal firearm possession was one Jaylen Davis, 18, who was found at the location by authorities. Charged with felony firearm possession and probation violation, he is being held without bail, as a prior felony conviction meant he and the other men involved were barred from legally carrying guns. Detained at the scene, Davis wore an ankle monitor and was on probation at the time of the incident, with his court appearance scheduled this afternoon.
The Sacramento County Coroner's Office has confirmed the identities of Dorsey and Doerr, while a fourth man connected to the incident, 18-year-old Jaylen Davis, is not facing homicide charges, as reported by KCRA. After deputies responded to a call about an apartment showing signs of multiple bullet holes and deceased individuals inside, a witness corroborated the sheriff's account that Davis retaliated against the robbers after one had killed the unnamed victim. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office has been consulted, and at this time, no murder charges have been filed against Davis.
Meanwhile, Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper has levied criticism at Mercy Housing, the operators of the Lance Apartments, accusing the organization of initially withholding surveillance footage that was critical to the investigation. The sheriff's office obtained the video through a search warrant, which served as a key factor in locating and questioning a crucial witness, despite complications that "process the scene in a manner that was unnecessarily more time-consuming than if they had spoken to the witness earlier," as mentioned by KCRA.
In response to the incident, Mercy Housing has issued a statement, as provided in the KCRA coverage, stating, "The tragic incident at the Lance Apartments has shaken us all. Mercy Housing is committed to the safety and well-being of residents and works in close collaboration with local law enforcement to address any illegal activity on our properties." The organization also emphasized their cooperation with the authorities and their review to refine their crisis response framework.
