The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is currently soliciting community input on the proposed Downtown I-10 expansion project, dubbed the Downtown 10, which aims to extend the freeway from Executive Center Boulevard to Copia Street. Officials from TxDOT unveiled the project plans, which are set to be implemented in three phases, with the inaugural phase focusing on the area from State Spur 1966 to 0.5 miles east of Campbell Street, according to KFOX-TV. The first phase is funded with $500 million, and construction is anticipated to commence in 2028.
In a public meeting held at the El Paso Convention Center, TxDOT hosted an open-house session to discuss the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the expansion plans. Residents were allowed to examine project maps and engage directly with the Downtown I-10 project team. As reported by the El Paso Times, the meeting served as a platform for public deliberation over the prospective infrastructural development.
The initiative has garnered a mixture of criticism and support within the community. Daniel Rubio, president of the Friends of Sunset Heights Neighborhood Association, mentioned to KTSM, "I think families here are overwhelmingly in support of the widening of I-10." He elaborates on the traffic issues, saying, "It’s a pretty big issue with traffic choking as we get closer to Downtown, especially if there’s an accident. So I’m really hoping that this will alleviate the flow in general and that we won’t have to exit on Cotton or the actual Downtown exit and go through all the lights just to try to get back to Sunset Heights."
