The waters off the coast of Point Loma became the backdrop for a Coast Guard interception yesterday, as four individuals aboard a small vessel were detained while attempting to reach California shores. According to official reports from the U.S. Coast Guard, at 9:02 AM, the Coast Guard Cutter Benjamin Bottoms—a Sentinel-class cutter operating in the area—came upon a 20-foot cabin cruiser-style boat carrying four adults, all of whom claimed Mexican nationality.
Further information released by the U.S. Coast Guard Newsroom indicated that the interception occurred 10 miles west of Point Loma, a routine patrol quickly turned into a law enforcement operation as the crew of the Benjamin Bottoms executed their interdiction and boarding protocols without incident—no injuries have been reported as the result of the operation, the suspects now facing an uncertain legal status as their fate lies in the hands of the federal authorities they were transferred to.
Upon securing the vessel and its occupants, the Coast Guard personnel transferred custody of the four individuals to another Department of Homeland Security agency at Ballast Point, which will lead the subsequent investigation to determine the full circumstances of their attempted maritime entry. The the Coast Guard's swift action echoes an all-too-familiar scenario along the California coast, where patrols are vigilant for signs of smuggling or unauthorized entry by sea.
