Union County Park Ranger Kevin Mager has been honored with the "Caught in the Act" Award for going beyond his call of duty to assist a Ukrainian visitor who found herself stranded. On May 23, when a woman was left at the Cane Creek Park campground with limited funds and no clear way to get back to Washington, D.C., Ranger Mager stepped up to provide much-needed aid. He not only arranged her transportation to the Greyhound bus station but also helped her purchase the ticket, ensuring she had snacks and drinks for the journey ahead.
"He took the extra time and used appropriate resources to ensure she had a good and safe experience after what she encountered the night before," Park Superintendent Jared Steele recounted, her gratitude evident as she embraced the staff before departing, according to Union County's official announcement. The County's recognition program highlights employees like Mager, who demonstrate exceptional dedication to their roles.
County Manager Brian Matthews emphasized that Mager's approach exemplified the heart and dedication that employees bring to their work every day. "He didn’t just see someone in need - he took initiative to make sure she was safe and supported. That’s what service to the community looks like," Matthews expressed in a ceremony surprising Mager with the award on September 10. Alongside the recognition, Mager also received a $250 bonus and the opportunity to be named Employee of the Year.
The award ceremony included the presence of notable figures, such as Deputy County Manager Patrick Niland, Assistant County Manager Clayton Voignier, and Parks & Recreation Director Jim Chaffin, who acknowledged Mager's actions with the coveted quarterly Award.
