The University of Cincinnati's College of Arts & Sciences has taken a team-oriented approach to research by combining the forces of its 12 research centers. The unification, aimed at magnifying their impact, is facilitated by the newly launched A&S Action Collaborative. According to a statement obtained by UC News, these centers reach across disciplines including machine learning and AI, environmental sciences, cyber strategy, and urban policy. Rina Williams, the social sciences division's associate dean and founder of the collaborative, recognized the potential for interdisciplinary synergy and furthered support for impactful community-engaged research.

Moving beyond their previous siloed operations, center directors at UC warmly received the proposal by Williams, sparking conversations on potential collaborative projects. The centers are not strangers to innovative work, with notable projects such as the Cedar Language Resource Center's incorporation of VR in language teaching. Another center, the Center for Public Engagement with Science, is making education accessible with their Science Harvest event at Cincinnati’s Northside Farmers Market, engaging kids with hands-on science experiments as reported by UC News.

One of the more recent and significant developments is the near half-million-dollar grant bestowed upon the establishment of the Center for Explainable, Ethical, and Trustworthy AI, known as a trailblazer for humanities-oriented research into AI's societal impact. "Our centers and institutes are founded and directed by some passionate, engaged faculty, and they do incredible public-facing, accessible learning," declared Will Umphres, political science associate professor and the Dean’s Fellow for the Action Collaborative in an interview with UC News.

The overarching aim of the collaborative is to expose the UC student body and broader communities to the profound merits of interdisciplinary research. The visionary leaders of these centers are thinking on their feet – considering how their academic knowledge might transform the external world. This tie-up is more than just a handshake between disciplines; it's a commitment to 'Discovery In Action', the college's new slogan that propels liberal arts studies from the theoretical domain into tangible societal contribution.

Looking forward, the Action Collaborative plans to centralize community outreach and create a singular platform for regional organizations to engage with UC's expertise. Whether it's urban development or civil discourse, Williams assures, "It creates an incredible range of opportunities," as echoed in her conversation with UC News. Essentially, UC's new collaborative is shaping up to be a hub where academia intersects with real-world applications.
