It was another tough outing for the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team yesterday, as the Rainbow Wahine were swept by San Diego, marking their third loss in a row. During the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic held at the Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, the Rainbow Wahine struggled to gain momentum against a dominant San Diego team, finishing with a hitting percentage of .049 as opposed to San Diego's .271, as reported by KHON2.
Despite a valiant effort from UH's freshman, Cha'lei Reid, who led the team with nine kills, and sophomore setter Adrianna Arquette, who recorded her first career double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs, the Rainbow Wahine couldn't staunch the tide of their opponent's attacks. Reid's performance throughout the tournament earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team, alongside San Diego's MVP Nemo Beach, according to Hawaii Athletics.
San Diego showcased their tournament-winning form that weekend by also sweeping through other matches to claim the title. During Sunday's match, Isabel Clark and tournament MVP Nemo Beach hammered down a combined 26 kills for San Diego. Hawaii’s early lead in the first set was quickly overturned as San Diego countered with substantial runs in each of the following sets to ensure their victory.
Looking to recover from their opening weekend, the Rainbow Wahine are set to host the OUTRIGGER Invitational, beginning with a face-off against San Jose State on September 4. The Wahine's resilience will be tested once again, as they aim to rebound from their recent losing streak and satisfy home fans expecting a strong performance at the upcoming event. The full lineup of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team featured players from various participating schools, highlighting the competitive nature of the weekend's volleyball action, as noted by Hawaii Athletics.
