Wake County is taking measures into its own hands to ensure residents are not left in the lurch when severe weather hits. Recognizing the increasing frequency of hurricanes, tornadoes, and flash floods, the area is taking the adage "better safe than sorry" seriously. As part of National Preparedness Month this September, Wake County Emergency Management, together with local partners, is hosting events dedicated to boosting community preparedness levels.
These include kit-building workshops and emergency kit giveaways. Scheduled on Sept. 13 and 27 respectively, these initiatives are aimed at equipping individuals with the necessary tools and knowledge to face unforeseen disasters. According to a statement obtained by Wake County's announcement, these initiatives are a step towards "building a resilient and prepared community," as conveyed by Wake County Commissioner Shinica Thomas.
Volunteers at the kit-building events, sponsored in partnership with Wal-Mart and local Community Emergency Response Teams, will offer advice and checklists for picking up essential items. The events, taking place at various Wal-Mart locations across the county, promise to provide actionable advice and direct assistance to residents.
For those missing out on the DIY experience, there's another chance to get prepared with the kit giveaway on Sept. 27. Teaming up with Wake County Public Libraries, a limited number of emergency kits, filled with essentials, will be handed out to the community on a first-come, first-served basis. As per information from the Wake County's website, these libraries will start distribution at 9 a.m. sharp.
