Washingtonians looking for a reprieve from the summer heat may find some comfort in the forecast ahead, which promises a gradual cooldown accompanied by rain showers. The National Weather Service predicts today will be partly sunny, with temperatures peaking at a pleasant 82 degrees and light winds picking up speed in the morning. Evening time is expected to bring mostly cloudy skies and a gentle 63 degrees.
The transition towards milder days does, however, come with a few caveats as the NWS details a forecast that includes likely showers and potential thunderstorms starting Tuesday afternoon — indeed Tuesday's high will hover around 72 degrees with gusty northeast winds possibly reaching 22 mph, and there's a 60% chance of precipitation, with rainfall somewhere between a tenth and a quarter of an inch, although that could be higher in areas affected by thunderstorms. Tuesday night will likely continue this pattern, and the probability of showers and possible thunderstorms holding strong at 70%, as temperatures stick close to the low 60s.
The week's outlook suggests the rainy conditions won't let up immediately, with Wednesday's chances of showers remaining at 70 percent, though the high should stay around the 70-degree mark, a subtle indication of the season's shift. Wednesday night's forecast offers a glimmer of drier times, as the chance of showers drops to 40%, and temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-60s. As the week progresses, Washington D.C. is set to see a mix of clouds and sun, with Thursday's skies clearing up and temperatures again rising to near 80 degrees.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the NWS forecasts a return to sunshine with highs in the mid-70s to mid-80s. Friday's high is anticipated to reach an inviting 86 degrees, and the following nights are similarly expected to be mostly clear and cool. A pleasant plateau establishes itself with Saturday and Sunday both promising sunny to partly sunny conditions, highs comfortably pegged in the mid-70s.
