The West Memphis School Board has moved forward with a plan to realign its grade structure, reshaping the educational landscape for local families, as reported by Action News 5. The Instructional Realignment Plan, initiated by the West Memphis School District (WMSD), will transition 6th-grade students to junior high schools and 9th-grade students to the Academies of West Memphis, aiming to better prepare students for future success.
Community feedback played a pivotal role in shaping this strategic educational shift. The original proposal had both the 6th and 9th graders moving in Fall 2026. However, based on input, the plan was amended for 9th graders to make their transition in Fall 2026, and 6th grade in Fall 2027. "Most importantly, this decision reflects your voices; your feedback played a critical role in shaping the plan that was approved," according to a statement shared on the West Memphis School District's Facebook page.
"We sincerely thank our families, staff, and community partners for their engagement in this process. While this was a challenging decision, it is one that positions our district and students for long-term success," WMSD expressed in the announcement. Additionally, Superintendent Eric Foister, who initially proposed the realignment in August, hosted community meetings last week to discuss the details, as highlighted by WREG News.
