Washington State University is celebrating one of its own, with Gary Steele being honored with the Alumni Achievement Award, a distinction from the WSU Alumni Association for Cougars who've left a significant mark on their communities and professions, reports WSU News. Steele, a 1984 computer science graduate, is slated to accept this accolade on campus on September 19, with a lecture scheduled for the Honors Lounge.
His career has been nothing short of illustrious, spanning over three decades in the tech sphere, including roles like CEO of Shield AI and head honcho at Proofpoint, a cybersecurity leader. During this rich career, he has also invested time in his alma mater, contributing to advisory boards and speaking at commencement ceremonies. Steele is joining an esteemed list of 2025 honorees like Varinder Bhalla and Dr. Gerry Ebalaroza-Tunnell, among others.
According to WSU News, Partha Pande, dean of the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, praised Steele for his exemplary "excellence, leadership, and service," highlighting his influential thoughts on security and his extensive industry achievements. Not just a leader but a mentor, Steele has supported initiatives like the Harold Frank Engineering Entrepreneurship Institute and helped update the university's computer science curriculum.
WSU's Alumni Association initiated the Alumni Achievement Award in 1970 as a salute to graduates who have profoundly served the university community and left an indelible mark on their respective fields. Steele's receipt of the award is a testament to a career built on innovation, as well as a deep-rooted commitment to nurturing the next generation of pioneers in technology and entrepreneurship, thus a shining example to Cougs everywhere.
