A tragic incident occurred in Akron's Highland Square neighborhood when a 25-year-old man was fatally wounded after being unintentionally struck by gunfire. The violence unfolded early yesterday morning on the 800 block of West Market Street, as reported by Cleveland19. Responding to the scene at approximately 12:25 a.m., Akron police officers found the young man with a critical gunshot wound.
Local vendors, present during the incident, recounted the harrowing moment with shots disrupting the night. Derek Woods, an outdoor vendor and owner of Davey’s Dog House, told Cleveland19, "I heard three shots fired." Following the sounds of gunfire, chaos ensued as another vendor, Justin Bratcher, told Cleveland19, "It was a lot of commotion and there was a lot of panic because nobody knew who was shot, where it came from and where they went."
The victim was transported to the Cleveland Clinic Akron General, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Akron Police Chief Brian Harding extended condolences to the victim's loved ones, saying, "On behalf of the Akron Police Department, our hearts go out to the family and friends of the young man who lost his life," in a statement obtained by Cleveland.com. The preliminary investigation suggests that the victim was caught in the crossfire between two unknown suspects. The Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Unit of the Akron Police Department are actively conducting interviews and collecting evidence in pursuit of justice.
Reflecting the community's concern for safety, Akron's mayor issued a statement, in conjunction with the police department's efforts, to intensify security measures in Highland Square. As quoted in FOX8's report, "No one deserves to lose their life because of senseless violence," as stated by Police Chief Brian Harding. The ongoing investigation seeks to shed light on the circumstances that led to the tragic loss of life of an individual simply out for an evening with friends.
