The Agency on Elderly Affairs is reaching out to the senior community, offering a helpful opportunity for those navigating the complexities of chronic condition management. Starting on October 8, a six-week workshop series titled "Better Choices, Better Health" is set to begin, designed to aid seniors in taking greater control of their health. Sessions are scheduled for each Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hanalei Neighborhood Center.

Limitations do exist; enrollment is first-come, first-served, capping at 15 participants to maintain an environment conducive to personalized interaction and learning. To fully benefit from the program, attendees are encouraged to actively participate across all six sessions. According to the county announcement, this series represents an initiative by the Self-Management Resource Center (SMRC) to bolster kūpuna's confidence and equip them with skills to manage their health better while leading active lives.

The curriculum covers a range of pertinent topics – from preventing falls and enhancing breathing techniques to ensuring the effective use of medications. Elements such as diet, exercise, and ways to work more efficiently with healthcare providers are also integral parts of the program. It's about providing the tools and support necessary for seniors to continue to thrive.

Participants will have the opportunity to develop weekly action plans, and to quite literally, take shared steps towards self-improvement. They will exchange experiences and to mutually support one another through the tribulations and triumphs of self-management. More details about the workshops and registration information can be found on the Hawai'i Healthy Aging Partnership website or by contacting Johnny Yago.

The Agency has also made provisions for auxiliary aid or services, interpreters for non-English speakers, or other accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Those in need of assistance are asked to contact Johnny Yago promptly to ensure availability.
