As the season shifts and cooler evenings beckon the warmth of a backyard flame, Apple Valley reminds residents of the importance of safe practices during recreational burning. The city's latest bulletin outlines crucial guidelines designed to prevent property damage and maintain public safety.
Recreational fires, per city stipulations, are limited to a maximum size of three feet in all dimensions and must be encased in non-combustible materials like rock, masonry, or metal. These fires can't be closer than 25 feet from combustible structures, including houses, garages, and fences. Importantly, all recreational fires must have adult supervision until they are completely extinguished, and the presence of a fire extinguisher or connected garden hose is compulsory for dealing with potential emergencies. Winds exceeding 15 miles per hour are a no-go for lighting fires.
The city's guidelines are clear: any complaint about smoke may lead to a fire's immediate end, and either the Fire or Police Department can order a fire. Public property hosts fires only in designated areas, ensuring that this pastime does not infringe upon the communal rights-of-way. Furthermore, the burning of materials such as rubber, plastics, treated materials, or waste is strictly prohibited, safeguarding the environment against harmful pollutants.
Residents must also adhere to the restrictions on firewood, which should not stretch beyond three feet in length. With these measures, the city aims to maintain a delicate balance – fostering community and warmth, while also protecting that very community from the hazards of uncontrolled flames. For further clarification on regulations, Apple Valley encourages citizens to call the Apple Valley Fire Department at 952.953.2600 during business hours or dial 911 for after-hours concerns.
