In a move poised to transform emergency medical response in Arlington, the city’s EMS system has now equipped its first responders with a life-saving tool: whole blood. A collaboration involving the Arlington Fire Department, AMR Arlington, and Medical City Arlington has resulted in the launch of a Whole Blood Program. This newly implemented program ensures that paramedics can carry and administer whole blood at the scene of an emergency, crucial for patients who suffer severe trauma or significant blood loss, according to the City of Arlington.

Fire Chief Bret Stidham, in a statement captured by the department’s release, highlighted the enhanced capability, saying, per the City of Arlington, “This program represents another way we continue advancing life-saving care for our community,” and not only does it represent a significant leap forward for medical response teams with the backing of the program, it integrates the expertise and resources of multiple agencies to deliver hospital-grade interventions directly where they are needed most which is often at the side of a road or in someone's home, where time is of the essence, and where until now, options have been limited.

Moreover, the initiative launches at a time when pre-hospital care is increasingly essential, with faster response times directly correlating to higher survival rates in critical incidents. The Whole Blood Program aims to bridge the gap between an emergency occurrence and hospital treatment, effectively bringing advanced care to patients amid the precious window where it can make the most difference.
