In a commendable effort to tackle the perils of drunk driving among the youth, Arlington Police Department's Officer Hinson and Investigator Crocker have been recognized with the Outstanding Educator Award by MADD Texas. This accolade follows their impactful work earlier this year with the Shattered Dreams program, where they brought the harsh reality of impaired driving to high schools across the Arlington Independent School District (Arlington ISD).
The award, which underscores the unwavering dedication of the DWI Unit, was celebrated in a social media post by the Arlington Police Department. In an initiative to prevent drunk driving crashes and fatalities, these officers led a program that included staging realistic mock DWI crashes at every high school within the district. Their hands-on approach sought to educate students on the very real consequences of driving while impaired. The department's post highlighted the officers' work, stating, "You'd be hard pressed to find a group more committed to preventing drunk driving crashes and deaths than our DWI Unit."
Arlington PD's proactive educational tactics reflect a growing trend in law enforcement agencies becoming more involved in community education. The Shattered Dreams program is designed to simulate the reality and aftermath of a drunk-driving accident and has been a key component in the department's outreach to teenagers, arguably the most at-risk demographic for such incidents. With these staged events, Officer Hinson and Investigator Crocker have provided visceral learning experiences that mere statistics or warning flyers could never convey.
