An Athens man has been charged with child exploitation following a coordinated operation between the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and the Athens Police Department, this coming after a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) alerted authorities to his activities. The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Micah Boring, is alleged to have uploaded large quantities of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) via the communication app Discord. According to a report by WVLT, a search warrant executed at Boring’s residence led to the seizure of multiple electronic devices, which, upon examination, were found to house thousands of illicit images.
Following the seizure of these images, the McMinn County Grand Jury indicted Boring on September 16th, charging him with one count of sexual exploitation of a minor for possessing over 100 images and one count of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor for possessing over 25 images, as revealed in a TBI newsroom release. The TBI is part of an ICAC Task Force known for its efforts in addressing internet crimes against children; Boring was subsequently arrested on September 30th and remains incarcerated at McMinn County Jail with a bond set at $500,000.
In addressing the curtailing of these crimes, TBI has listed resources on its website while directing parents and caregivers to NCMEC’s netsmartz.org for tools designed to foster safer online environments for children, as stated in the release obtained by TBI Newsroom.
Indeed, as the investigation persists, the TBI and local law enforcement urge the public to remain vigilant and proactive by reporting suspicious online activity; with the TBI Tipline and NCMEC's CyberTipline serving as the conduits through which citizens may become the watchful eyes, these agencies rely upon to apprehend individuals who contribute to the scourge of CSAM as per the details shared by WATE.
