Austin Energy is taking decisive action on climate and reliability, announcing a contract with Jupiter Power to supply up to 100 megawatts of electricity through a utility-scale battery storage facility. This deal is a significant leap forward in reaching the city’s ambitious goal of acquiring 125 megawatts of battery storage capacity by 2027. "This battery storage project boosts our grid, but it’s more than an investment in infrastructure — it’s a commitment to a cleaner, more resilient energy future for Austin,” Mayor Kirk Watson stated, according to the City of Austin.
Battery storage is crucial for delivering consistent power by storing the energy when demand is low and releasing it during peak usage. This type of system is designed to more effectively integrate renewable energy sources, thus decreasing dependency on fossil fuels and enhancing grid resilience, particularly during extreme weather scenarios. With an estimated annual value of $14.4 million, extending potentially up to 20 years, the agreement signifies the largest battery storage endeavor by Austin Energy to date.
Stuart Reilly, interim general manager for Austin Energy, highlighted the agreement's role in transforming the grid and ensuring sustainable, reliable power for its consumers. "Battery storage is an important component of our energy strategy, and we’re proud to bring this emerging technology online to benefit our community,” Reilly told Austin Energy.
The move by Austin Energy aligns with its Resource, Generation, and Climate Protection Plan to 2035, aiming to shape a cleaner energy future that maintains affordability, sustainability, and equity. The battery storage project not only serves to meet the city's climate objectives but also solidifies the basis for strategic planning regarding future energy resources, including the need to possibly rely on peaking resources to maintain system reliability.
Andy Bowman, CEO of Jupiter Power, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. "We are extremely pleased to be working with Austin Energy, a nationally recognized leader in grid reliability, clean energy and efficiency, to advance their energy storage goals - especially here, where Jupiter was founded," Bowman said. With both companies rooted in Austin, this collaboration is set to expand the city's energy capabilities significantly.
