In a development that has Baltimore's Fallstaff Elementary/Middle School community on alert, a raccoon that was discovered inside the school tested positive for rabies. This incident was reported on by CBS News, shedding light on the situation and the measures taken.
The animal made its way into the building, supposedly, through an open door during dismissal time on Tuesday. According to school officials, the staff reacted by corralling the unwanted visitor under lockers using trash cans until the Baltimore City Health Department's Animal Control unit arrived and secured the raccoon. "We take any potential rabies exposure seriously, especially in a school setting," Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Taylor expressed in a statement obtained by FOX Baltimore, also commending the school staff for their swift response to contain the animal.
Fortunately, no injuries or bites were reported in the wake of the incident. The area where the raccoon was captured is scheduled for professional cleaning and disinfection, although the school will continue to operate as usual, except in the affected area.
