In an effort to spread awareness during this year's Fire Prevention Week, taking place from October 5-11, the Benbrook Fire Department has partnered with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to educate the public on the safe usage of lithium-ion batteries in the home. With the theme "Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home," they aim to address the ubiquity and potential dangers of this common energy source. The collaboration will include sharing vital information through various channels to improve understanding about safely enjoying the benefits of lithium-ion batteries.
The initiative underscores a pressing need to inform consumers on how to purchase, charge, and recycle their lithium-ion batteries—considering their widespread presence in our daily lives in devices like smartphones, laptops, and power tools, there's a heightened risk for fire if not handled correctly. The Benbrook Fire Department's emphasis is clear, as stated in their social media post, "These batteries are everywhere and are now part of our everyday lives," highlighting that the stakes are high, and safeguarding homes requires constant vigilance and informed choices to prevent possible fires.
As the week progresses, the Fire Department will consistently distribute useful tips and guidelines for residents to follow. Among the pieces of advice, the community is urged to heed best practices for charging devices, using manufacturer-provided chargers, and never leaving batteries charging unattended or overnight. Understanding the signs of battery damage and when to safely dispose of them also forms a critical part of the campaign's messages to mitigate any incidents that could lead to a household fire.
