The Berkeley Police Department, in coordination with the Emeryville Police Department, Oakland Police Department, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, has apprehended and charged a suspect in connection with the shooting that transpired on October 4. The incident, which involved an exchange of gunfire between two vehicles in Berkeley, led to a multi-agency investigation.
Details from the Berkeley Police Department's social media post recount a confrontation that began near Ashby Avenue and 7th Street around 5:29 PM. Suspect Ramon Lupian, reportedly armed and at the wheel of a red Chevrolet Tahoe, fired upon a black Nissan Altima. Both vehicles were verified as being at the scene via Automated License Plate Reader cameras, and the Altima was ultimately discovered involved in a crash in Emeryville, with its occupants fleeing the scene.
The Emeryville Police Department detained the four individuals associated with the stolen Altima when they returned to the crash site. Lupian and his passenger were spotted removing bags from the Altima before escaping the scene in the red Tahoe. Berkeley PD's investigation reveals that Lupian had witnessed the robbery of Altima earlier in the day in Oakland and pursued the culprits, resulting in the shooting.
Following a vehicle pursuit, the Oakland Police Department successfully intercepted and took Lupian and a passenger into custody. "Three firearms were recovered from the Tahoe," according to the statement from the Berkeley Police Department. On Tuesday, a slew of charges, including shooting at an occupied vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon, among other felony enhancements, were filed against Lupian by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
