Big things are happening in Bloomington, as the city just kicked off the construction of a new hub for health and wellness. Yesterday, officials gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of a sparkling facility designed to house a myriad of services and activities catered towards improving the community's way of life. The shovels may have just hit the dirt, but the vision of bringing a raft of resources under one roof has been a long time in the making for Bloomington residents.
Approved via popular vote back in 2023, the project is financed through a sales tax increase of half a percent, which is putting to use a cool $101.8 million. According to the press release by the City of Bloomington, this modern space isn’t just some run-of-the-mill gym. It's set to be equipped with spaces for programs and events, a pool and locker rooms tailored for families, gyms, studios, an indoor playground, and more, across the street that will be demolished on October 20 from the Creekside Community Center.
This isn't just about physical fitness; it's a new cornerstone for public health in the region. The community center will consolidate Parks and Recreation services with Public Health offerings in a move that's expected to streamline access to comprehensive wellness for all residents. It’s a proactive mixing of immunizations, nutrition education, and health resources for older adults. This, along with athletic amenities, aims to improve the bigger picture of community health.
Interim City Manager Kathy Hedin looked forward, saying, "As our city continues to grow, we are investing in community amenities that bring people together, enhance quality of life, and cultivate an enduring and remarkable community where people want to be." The Mayor of Bloomington, Tim Busse, reflected similar sentiments, emphasizing that the center is a major investment in our community that aligns with residents' aspirations and collective values.
Driving past 98th Street and Penn Avenue, one might notice the dirt being turned and the signs of progress, with an eye on the fall of 2027 as the target for the facility's doors to open wide to the public.
