Boston ended its Columbus Day holiday with heavy rain and strong winds as the season’s first nor’easter moved through Massachusetts. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the city faced a 100% chance of rain Monday, with up to one inch of precipitation expected and wind gusts reaching 39 mph.
CBS News Boston reported that the storm developed from the clash of warm and cold air masses off the East Coast. Eastern and southeastern Massachusetts saw the heaviest rainfall, ranging from 1 to 3 inches, with isolated areas receiving up to 5 inches.
The National Weather Service forecasted continued showers and fog into Tuesday, with a 70% chance of precipitation and northeast winds around 14 mph. Coastal areas were under a Coastal Flood Advisory for Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, where minor flooding and beach erosion were possible. Offshore waves were expected to reach 5 to 10 feet.
Conditions are expected to improve midweek. By Wednesday, the chance of rain drops to 20%, with partly sunny skies. Mostly sunny weather and highs near 61 degrees are expected by Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
