Get ready to lace up those hiking boots, Boulder County residents. There's exciting news on the horizon for outdoor enthusiasts. Construction is set to kick off for the Prairie Run open space park, which promises to be a natural haven dotted with ponds, streams, and trails. As obtained by Boulder County, officials announced that Phase I of the project will begin on October 6 and should wrap up by the end of April 2026, with parts of the park opening as early as May or June of the same year.
The 1,377-acre site is strategically located for maximum relaxation and serenity, with Boulder Creek and Coal Creek snaking through the terrain. Wrapped by a variety of roads, the park is accessible yet comfortably nestled among nature. Conveniently close to several towns, the promise of a new green space has the local hiking boots buzzing with excitement, poised to become a cherished addition for nearby communities.
Phase I development focuses on the southwest area of the site, bringing to life the Sun Stride Trail, a soft-surface path stretching 2 miles with an access point to Boulder Creek, as well as connecting trails to Erie and plans tying into the Boulder to Erie Regional Trail (BERT). In addition, there's talk of a flashing crosswalk on 119th Street to ensure safety for pedestrians hopping from Kenosha Road to Jasper Road. Prepping for sunset gazes and restful pauses, the trail will also feature multiple benches and a shade structure for those mid-hike breaks.
The Kingbird Crossing Trailhead, primed for parking 30 vehicles, including spots designated for ADA use, also makes its debut just a hop north of Jasper Road on N. 109th Street. Complete with an accessible restroom and an electric gate ensuring no after-hours parking, detailed planning signals a thought-out approach to this outdoor venture. Not to be outdone, the county has a webpage dedicated to the park, complete with maps and a comprehensive management plan for those who like to have every detail at their fingertips.
