The Bronx District Attorney’s Office is holding its 8th annual 5K Run/Walk/Roll to End Domestic Violence today. The event is organized in partnership with the New York Yankees, the Office of Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, the Urban Resource Institute, and the 161st Street Business Improvement District. DA Darcel D. Clark said in the official announcement, "Survivors will share stories of courage and resilience."
The problem is shown in numbers from Clark’s office, with about 1,900 cases now handled by the Domestic Violence Bureau. The Bronx DA’s Crime Victims Assistance Bureau offers therapy and other help to stop violence and support victims. The DA’s office is preparing for the event, with over a thousand people signed up to raise awareness about domestic violence.
Participation is free, and several local organizations will be present to provide information and resources about domestic violence. The event starts at 9:30 a.m. at East 161st Street, between Grand Concourse and Walton Avenue. Participants will wear purple to represent the cause.
The first 1,000 people to arrive will receive an event t-shirt, and the first 1,000 to cross the finish line will receive a commemorative medal.
