A sweeping immigration enforcement operation named "Operation Deportation" was carried out this week by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, alongside U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), resulting in the arrest of 23 individuals. According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office social media post, the initiative fell under the cooperative purview of Butler County's 287(g) program, which legally endows local law enforcement with the ability to enforce federal immigration laws under ICE direction.
The operation spread across multiple days and locales within Butler County and primarily targeted individuals with a record of criminal convictions, active warrants, or those who have contravened immigration legislation. In a public statement, Sheriff Richard K. Jones commended the joint effort put forth by local deputies and federal agents, articulating the operation's mission as a venture to safeguard the Butler County community from those who have transgressed against its laws or who might pose a danger.
The 287(g) program is a distinction bestowed upon certain local law enforcement bodies, authorizing them to enact select immigration enforcement roles under ICE's guidance—an arrangement that Butler County is actively a part of. The sheriff's office, in the announcement, reaffirmed its commitment to lawful enforcement measures and the overall public safety of Butler County residents through collaborative pursuits with their federal counterparts.
While Sheriff Jones emphasized the operation's success in maintaining local security, "Our goal is to keep Butler County safe," the office has noted that their collaboration with ICE under the 287(g) program signifies an ongoing partnership that enables deputies to work "hand-in-hand" to oust individuals who have flouted United States law or thence pose a risk to local tranquillity. The initiative and its outcomes have been publicly recognized, underscoring both the Butler County Sheriff’s Office's rigorous pursuit of lawfulness and the embedded structures facilitating federal and local law enforcement synergy in immigration matters.
