The Davis Migrant Center has once again been the site of joy and learning for the local children courtesy of Campamento Alegre, an initiative that merges free play with structured educational activities. This initiative, now in its third stride, continues to break down the barriers that have traditionally kept these children from participating in the City’s recreational programs. Language, cost, and enrollment issues have fallen as Campamento Alegre on-site offerings are not just provided in Spanish, but are also free of charge, thus fostering inclusivity.

For a full week in August, the Davis Parks and Community Services (PCS) staff came together with Yolo County Housing to orchestrate a myriad of activities which included soccer, art-making, and a career day. This year, the program outdid itself by adding interactions with horses and a raffle. It’s worth mentioning that the raffle prizes were the fruit of donations from Supervisor Sheila Allen and Assembly Majority Leader Aguiar-Curry. The PCS department, bolstered by local faith-based community donations, managed the staffing and programming, according to a press release from the City of Davis.

Amid the activities and festivities, the importance of access to such recreational engagements cannot be overstated. These events play a critical role in promoting healthy social interactions, physical exercise, skill-building, and creating a sense of belonging. Ian Evans, Yolo County Housing Executive Director, lauded the PCS staff and the Davis City Council for their continuous commitment. "Every year, City staff think of more exciting and educational ways to engage the kids who live here," Evans told City of Davis News.

Deanne Machado, City Parks and Community Services Director, resonated this sentiment, highlighting the event's evolution. "Each year, Campamento Alegre grows in both creativity and impact," Machado stated, as noted by the city's official website. Her words underscore the program’s success in enhancing the lives of participating children. The PCS Department, aligned with the City Council's ongoing support, continues to make inclusive programming a year-round effort. Such measures include scholarships and ensuring reserved spots for these children in cherished seasonal events like the Davis Children’s Nutcracker.
