Austin's public transportation agency, CapMetro, has appointed a new leader for its Transit Police Department, bringing on board RenEarl Bowie as the new chief. CapMetro's President and CEO, Dottie Watkins, expressed her enthusiasm over the hire, stating, "I am thrilled to have RenEarl Bowie as our new Chief of Transit Police," as obtained by CBS Austin. She hailed Bowie for his leadership and his commitment to what she described as "policing the right way, through service, accountability, and strong community relationships."
Before joining CapMetro's ranks earlier this year as a Police Captain, Bowie had an extensive 30-year career in law enforcement with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS); his tenure there included serving as the Chief of the Training Operations Division until 2022. After leaving DPS, Bowie joined the nascent Transit Police Department in May 2025 and saw the force become operational in June with nine officers, two sergeants, and one captain. The department, since then, has expanded to 12 officers. With a Master's Degree in criminal justice from Texas State University and a certificate from the School of Police Staff and Command from Northwestern University, Bowie also contributes to the community as an adjunct professor at Austin Community College and Temple College, according to KVUE.
Highlighting the smooth handover of responsibilities, Watkins also extended thanks to Assistant Chief Joseph Rose for his interim leadership, which ensured a successful changeover. The previous Chief, Eric Robins, left the post in July, paving the way for the search that culminated in Bowie's selection.

Bowie himself expressed his gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to the transit agency's goals, stating, "First and foremost, I want to thank CapMetro's leadership for entrusting me with the opportunity to serve as the next Chief of Transit Police," this statement shared by both CBS Austin and KVUE. He emphasized his belief in the mission and the honor he feels in leading the team as they work to fortify community relationships and ensure the public's safety and security within the transit system.
