The Colorado Department of Transportation, along with United Companies, has successfully wrapped up the resurfacing work on a stretch of US Highway 40 in Winter Park. This road construction has smoothed out approximately four miles of highway, from Vasquez Road at Mile Point 229 to Winter Park Drive at MP 233, according to CDOT. The upgrade, initiated on May 12, saw its completion on October 15 this year.
Described as a necessary enhancement by both transportation officials and locals, Colorado Department of Transportation Executive Director Shoshana Lew emphasized the benefits of the project, stating, "These improvements were identified by both CDOT and the Winter Park community as priority needs, and we are proud to see this significant project completed." Lew added that "The US 40 Winter Park resurfacing project enhances safety, improves mobility for residents and visitors, and strengthens vital connections throughout our mountain region," as obtained by CDOT.
In terms of specifics, the work included removing the old and laying new asphalt, updating guardrails, and installing new ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act at key intersections. The attention to accessibility was not sidelined, as four ADA-compliant curb ramps were constructed across three intersections aimed at aiding the functional mobility of varied users.
Further advantages garnered from the highway's facelift feature include improved road surface, bolstered damage resistance, and the implementation of a 31-inch-high guardrail that meets new safety standards. This particular guard rail aims to keep vehicles from veering off the road more effectively. Alongside, bridge joint repairs were also carried out at MP 224 near the community of Tabernash.
