The proposal to transform the now vacant Central Elementary School in City Heights into a Safe Parking site is gaining traction. This initiative is a response to the increasing number of families who are homeless and in dire need of secure spots to catch some rest at night. According to a news release published by the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC), the San Diego Unified School District Board of Trustees has given the green light to a licensing agreement with SDHC to kickstart the Safe Parking Program at the school's site.

The plan has received backing from City Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera, who, in a statement obtained by the San Diego Housing Commission, relayed his own experiences, saying, per SDHC, "I know what it feels like to call a car home and not know whether the place I was parked was safe to sleep. No child should ever have to feel that way." Elo-Rivera's support for the program includes lobbying for financial resources to ensure it is adequately funded, thereby offering stability for San Diego's vulnerable families. The SDHC Board of Commissioners is expected to review the contract with Jewish Family Service of San Diego, the intended operator of the program, on November 7.

Supporters believe that the Safe Parking Program will serve as a crucial stepping stone for families in crisis, providing a buffer from the uncertainty of life on the streets. San Diego Unified School District Board Vice President Richard Barrera mentioned in an interview that such programs serve as a bridge between crisis and recovery, between fear and stability, and between merely surviving and thriving. The sentiment is echoed by the district's Board of Education Trustee, Shana Hazan, who emphasized the importance of providing children with a secure environment to sleep and the impact this has on their academic success.
