In an effort to provide relief to those struggling with the high cost of home energy, the Charlotte County Human Services Department has begun to accept applications for utility assistance. The funding, which is aimed at helping low-income households, comes from a $471,182 grant awarded by the Florida Department of Commerce.

Assistance is available to qualifying households, with eligibility determined by monthly gross income. This aid is intended to be a one-time help within a 12-month span to "help offset the high cost of home energy." However, folks need to move fairly quickly; the applications are being accepted through June 30, 2026, or until they have exhausted the allocated funds, as reported by Charlotte County officials.

Moreover, the Low-Income Home Energy CRISIS Assistance program serves as a lifeline specifically for households facing imminent power cut-offs due to unpaid bills or those in need of a security deposit. Similar to the standard Low-Income Home Energy Assistance, this emergency support will cease to be available also by June 30, 2026, or when funding runs dry, whichever occurs first.

Seniors are not left to fend for themselves, as there is a special provision under the Emergency Home Energy Assistance Program. A partnership between the Department of Elder Affairs and the Area Agency on Aging of SW Florida ensures that households with a member 60 years or older can look to receive aid to settle past due energy bills. They are encouraged to apply before June 15, 2026, "or until all funds are expended," as per the Charlotte County announcement.
