A tragic incident unfolded in the Steele Creek Division when a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle earlier this week. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is currently probing the details surrounding the collision that led to the death of 76-year-old Hanh Hoang.

On Monday, Oct. 6, at about 8:19 a.m., CMPD officers arrived at the 9700 block of Shopton Rd. West, following reports of a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. They discovered Hanh Hoang lying in the roadway, unresponsive, alongside a Toyota Camry and its driver, according to a statement from CMPD. The driver, identified as 41-year-old Alma Monica Velasquez, stayed at the scene following the crash.

MEDIC responded swiftly, transporting Hoang to the hospital where he succumbed to his life-threatening injuries. Initial findings by detectives with the CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search indicate that Mr. Hoang was utilizing a marked crosswalk at the time he was hit. Both impairment and speed have been ruled out as contributing factors in the crash," the CMPD's official report states.

Velasquez now faces charges for misdemeanor death by vehicle due to allegedly failing to yield the right of way to Mr. Hoang. As the investigation remains active and ongoing, CMPD's Public Affairs Division is expected to release more information as it becomes available. Detectives encourage anyone who witnessed the crash or who has relevant information to contact Detective D. Leung at 704-432-2169 ext. 6.
