In a decisive move, United Way of Greater Knoxville has promoted from its own ranks, with Chrystal Armstrong Brown stepping up as the new permanent CEO after last serving in an interim capacity. The organization undertook a rigorous nationwide search process, which was expansive, including more than 200 candidates, before making the internal appointment. According to WVLT, the search spanned 27 states and candidates with diverse backgrounds in the nonprofit sector, particularly those associated with United Way or similar entities.

Brown's ascension comes after the post was vacated by Matt Ryerson, who left the organization in November 2024, to chase other career opportunities. She was initially named interim CEO following Ryerson's departure and previously held the position of Chief Impact Officer (CIO) starting April 2023, according to a statement obtained by WBIR. Her tenure at United Way of Greater Knoxville has coincided with a mission to witness and perpetuate a powerful sense of community through "compassion, collaboration, agility and innovation."

Jim LaPinska, UWGK board chair and member of the CEO search committee, shared with WATE that Armstrong Brown distinguished herself through her work as interim CEO, building trust in the community, and her adept management of the budget during times of uncertainty. Furthermore, LaPinska commended her for launching several initiatives aimed at improving early childhood care, economic mobility, and health within the local community.

Brown's background is rooted in Knoxville, where she completed a double major bachelor's degree in English rhetoric and writing and pursued coursework towards a Master of Arts in English from the University of Tennessee. She also holds an MBA from Johnson University, and prior to joining United Way, she contributed to the Emerald Youth Foundation and United Way of Southwest Virginia in various leadership and development roles, according to information from WVLT. With a history also in ministry, Brown brings 20 years of pastoral leadership experience into her new role, where she currently serves on the leadership team of two Knoxville churches.

Armstrong Brown told WBIR, "I am deeply honored to continue serving this community and United Way of Greater Knoxville as president and CEO." She has expressed her eagerness to help the community thrive and is poised to build upon the organization's longstanding legacy of enacting meaningful change. This leadership transition marks a new chapter for United Way of Greater Knoxville as it forges ahead into its second century of service.
