Clay County has found itself grappling with an unsettling incident as a local student from Lakeside Junior High School faces the consequences of a serious criminal offense. According to a Facebook post by the Clay County Sheriff's Office, a 13-year-old student was arrested after scribbling a threatening message in a school restroom. The written threat included plans to "bomb" the school and intent to kill students and staff, naming specific individuals, including the School Resource Officer.
The discovery of this message on Wednesday prompted immediate action. A school staff member found the writing and reported it to the School Resource Officer. Subsequently, Clay County authorities and school officials conducted a thorough investigation. The Sheriff's Office confirmed that the young suspect confessed and was believed to be acting alone. Despite the severity of the threat, authorities did not find any bomb-making materials during a search of the student's room.
The gravity of the situation has not gone unnoticed, as the charge levied against the student is significant: under statute 836.10(2), issuing written or electronic threats to kill or do bodily harm, or to conduct a mass shooting or an act of terrorism, is illegal. This charge was confirmed in the Clay County Sheriff's Office announcement. On Thursday, following the accusation, the teenager was taken into custody and transferred to the Department of Juvenile Justice - Duval Detention Center.
In the wake of the event, the Sheriff's Office and the Clay County School Board reiterated their dedication to maintaining secure and fear-free educational environments. Officials urge anyone who comes across threats or acts of violence, on or off campus, to report it promptly using the dedicated channels including the 9-1-1 emergency line, a non-emergency line, or the SaferWatch app.
