The Clayton Police Department has been kept busy this past week, dealing with a range of incidents including accidents, fraud attempts, and thefts, as they responded to 487 service calls from October 20 through 26, according to an official report published on the city's website. Notably, a juvenile on an electric bicycle was struck on Wydown Blvd. and DeMun Ave, where the driver engaged only briefly before departing without providing her details, leaving the young cyclist with minor injuries.
Vehicle-related incidents seemed to be a recurring theme throughout the week, including last Monday night's recovery of an acquaintance's stolen vehicle by Normandy PD, which had been reported during a previous CVS shoplifting investigation, although the suspect managed to elude authorities once more. A passer-by caught a glimpse of an elderly woman driving away after backing a silver BMW SUV into another car, the car's driver side wheel well suffering from the hit and run, the witness could not provide extensive details about the culprit.
On the fraud front, the CPD nabbed a woman on Tuesday at a local bank branch for attempting to deposit and withdraw funds from a check that didn't belong to her, prompting arrest for passing a bad check, "a teller reported that a woman was attempting to open an account using a check written to another person," as shared on Clayton's official website. On the same day, alert staff at a jewelry store averted a potential payroll fraud, sparking another investigation.
Other theft reports continued to surge during the week with a Walgreens employee witnessing a woman making away with a cart full of unpaid merchandise Wednesday morning, thereafter, three women were seen concealing items in their purses before fleeing the scene later that same day. The following day's incidents took a turn with a Straub's store theft of multiple liquor bottles, the suspects made off in a white Ford Explorer, though not before being spotted by an employee stocking the shelves. In a separate account, a resident of the Carrswold neighborhood returned from a family trip to find several jewelry pieces missing, these losses among others adding strain to the department's caseload.
The Clayton Police Department is relentlessly pursuing these cases and is urging the public for any assistance in these ongoing investigations, the department can be contacted at (314) 645-3000 for any tips or information.
