Yesterday, the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a small vessel carrying ten individuals suspected of not having legal documentation to enter the country. According to a press release from the U.S. Coast Guard, the interception occurred approximately 9 miles southwest of Point Loma, California.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center notified a patrolling cutter after receiving a report at about 2:30 AM of an unidentified vessel looking to gain entry into U.S. territorial waters quickly. The vessel was a 15-foot panga. On board were ten individuals, all claiming Mexican nationality.
The Coast Guard personnel aboard the Cutter Forrest Rednour (WPC 1129) located and stopped the vessel around 4 AM following the initial alert. The operations were part of ongoing efforts to secure the maritime approaches to the United States and enforce the law related to unauthorized entry.
The ten individuals were taken into custody, and the Coast Guard seized the boat. They were then transferred to another Department of Homeland Security agency for processing. This incident shines a light on the continuing challenges border security agencies face in dealing with unauthorized maritime incursions. The identities and circumstances of the individuals involved have not been disclosed to fully respect the ongoing investigative processes.
