In the wake of the recent catastrophic flooding in southwestern Colorado, Governor Jared Polis has officially declared the situation a disaster, leading the Colorado Department of Revenue (DOR) to announce a series of tax relief measures for those significantly affected by the natural calamity. In a statement, Governor Polis emphasized the state's commitment to aiding residents, saying, "We are supporting the Coloradans who have been impacted by these devastating floods every way we can, and that includes extending our state’s tax deadlines," also asserting a vigilant eye on the ongoing recovery endeavors, as per the Colorado Governor's Office.
The DOR has extended several state tax deadlines until December 31, granting a reprieve to taxpayers grappling with the aftermath of the floods. This includes income tax extensions originally due October 15 and sales taxes that were slated for an October 20 deadline, along with encouraging taxpayers to request penalty waivers for other taxes and fees due during October, such as marijuana, fuel, and retailer delivery fees by reaching out directly to the department, it should be noted however, this relief only applies to state taxes and does not apply to municipal or county taxes.
Eligibility for this tax relief is not automatically applied, requiring those in need to proactively contact the Department of Revenue to request an extension. For those requiring assistance, the Department has made available resources and a dedicated helpline at 303-238-SERV (7378), operational Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; taxpayers are also encouraged to visit the official website for additional information and support.
