In a remarkable academic achievement, Columbus Alternative High School senior Marcus McCullough has been recognized as one of the nation's top students. McCullough was named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, placing him among the top 1% of high school seniors across the country, as reported by Columbus City Schools. This distinction signifies his outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
Caught off guard by the announcement, McCullough was pulled out of his math class to receive the news that would place him in a group of elite scholars. "For it to actually happen, it feels a lot better than I thought it was going to feel," he told Columbus City Schools. His years of conscientious study and dedication to his academics underscore the significance of this recognition, as Dr. Drew Milligan, McCullough's school counselor, noted. Dr. Milligan praised McCullough's daily efforts, saying, "The recognition represents [McCullough’s] larger achievements but also the important work he has put in each day throughout the last four years and beyond."
Marcus found his spark of inspiration sophomore year, sitting next to a past semifinalist, as per the Columbus City Schools' interview. The recognition gave him a clear sense of direction: to follow in the footsteps of excellence. "Sophomore year I knew, like looking at my PSAT scores, seeing his and hearing that he was a semifinalist, I said, I want to go for that," said McCullough, according to the Columbus City Schools. This drive propelled him to pursue the demanding International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma at CAHS.
Embracing a philosophy of thorough commitment to his work, McCullough explained his approach in a statement obtained by Columbus City Schools. "I can’t sit down and do something halfway. I need to do the whole thing and make sure it’s to my own standards," he said. Remaining humble, he offered advice to his peers who might feel daunted by such high-stakes tests. Despite the pressures, he keeps his composure and focuses on his own abilities. "With me, I don’t really let the nerves get to me. I know what I’m capable of and whatever I score is what I’m going to score," McCullough adds.
McCullough's journey exemplifies what students in the Columbus City Schools district can achieve with determination, support, and opportunity. His accomplishments, while a personal victory, also highlight the potential and excellence within the CCS community. "He is very special to us, and we are proud of him," said Dr. Milligan about McCullough's impact. The academic community is eager to see the continued success and influence of this exceptional student in his future endeavors.
