Head custodian Wayne Walker isn't your everyday facilities manager. Known for his meticulous care of Columbus City Preparatory School for Boys (CCPSB), he's also leaving a mark that goes beyond spotless floors and organized classrooms. In a post published by CCPSB via the CCS official website, Walker's dual role as a custodian and mentor was highlighted in celebration of National School Custodian Appreciation Day.
Walker's journey in the custodial arts started early, making a lasting impression while assisting a custodian at South Mifflin Elementary as a student at Mifflin Middle School. Even before the sun had fully risen, he was learning the trade that would define not just a career, but a pathway to influencing young lives. As reported by CCPSB, his story illustrates the undeniable truth: first impressions of a school's exterior can shape public perception of what's inside.
The path Walker took wasn't the traditional academic route post-high school. Instead, his hands-on learning and certification in brick-and-block masonry from Southeast Career Center laid the groundwork for a decade in construction and eventually owning a custodial business. His return to Columbus City Schools brought not just his skills but his mentorship ethos, a detail CCPSB keenly emphasized. Over the years, he's not only kept schools in tip-top shape but has also coached Little League football and girls basketball, framing these experiences as chances to respect, guide, and uplift students.
Throughout his service, lasting over two decades within the district, Walker has become an integral part of not only the custodial staff but the broader school community. Often heard whistling or singing "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers as he works, his presence is one that resonates with positivity and encouragement. CCPSB's principal, Dr. Michael Warren, noted Walker's consistent messaging. "He is here to work," Warren said, according to the Columbus City Schools. "He is here to serve. And he always says, 'I want to do better.'" These attributes are the kind that CCPSB hopes its students will embrace and carry forward in their own journeys.
Intertwining custodial duties with life lessons, students frequently offer to lend Walker a hand. It's through these interactions that he leverages the power of giving back, reinforcing CCPSB's mission to educate and prepare its students for leadership and service in a global community. It's a testament to a belief Walker holds dear: in every task, there rests an opportunity for mentorship and growth for both teacher and pupil.
