A tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 4 in Seminole County when a 43-year-old Deltona man's Tesla was struck by a big rig, ultimately resulting in his death. The crash occurred around 9:25 p.m. near the Lake Mary Boulevard exit, as reported by ClickOrlando. For reasons still under investigation, the Tesla Model 3 was stationary in the center lane of the eastbound I-4 when it was rear-ended by the oncoming semi-truck.
Attempting to avoid the unexpected obstacle, the driver of the semi was unable to prevent the collision. After hitting the Tesla, the semi collided with a guardrail and overturned, while the struck vehicle was pushed off the road, hitting another big rig's side. Neither of the semi-truck drivers sustained injuries and stayed at the scene, according to details furnished by the Florida Highway Patrol.
The impact of the incident was severe enough that it necessitated the closure of all eastbound lanes of I-4, but they were later reopened. As per the crash report, all individuals involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. While the Florida Highway Patrol has not disclosed why the Tesla was stopped in the middle of the highway, an investigation is underway to uncover the circumstances that led to the collision, WESH reported.
Investigators are relying on evidence and witness statements to understand what happened. Authorities still don’t know why the Tesla stopped on the highway, triggering the deadly crash. The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation to find answers.
