Denton Municipal Electric (DME), the electric utility owned by the city of Denton, Texas, has struck a 10-year power purchase agreement with Jupiter Power, LLC to provide the city with a substantial increase in energy storage capabilities, specifically, a full 100 megawatts (MW) from the Tidwell Power II project nestled in the heart of central Texas. The deal, giving the nod by the Denton City Council on September 30, is set to enhance both the reliability and sustainability of Denton's energy supply when it kicks off in June 2026, per the City of Denton.

According to the agreement DME's commitment to reliability sustainability, and innovation leaps forward with foundations for a two-hour duration battery system that can provide energy during demand spikes and evening time when the sun goes down and solar energy wanes, but consumption doesn't, this is a move that will significantly aid in balancing out the fluctuations and unpredictability inherent in Texas's broader Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) market. The incorporation of battery systems is key to offsetting the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, addressing a long-due challenge for a solution amid the state’s often volatile energy landscape.

"We’re excited for this forward-looking project," DME General Manager Tony Puente expressed the significance of battery storage for Denton's utility strategy in a quote from the City of Denton, "Battery storage is an important component of our strategy to maintain affordability, reliability, and sustainability for the Denton community." The inclusion of this advanced battery storage complements DME’s existing energy framework, which notably runs entirely on renewable energy drawn from wind and solar sources.
