Joining a bevy of cities in litigation, Denver has announced it is suing the Trump Administration over claims that it has illegally withheld grant funding. The lawsuit, which parallels actions taken by cities such as Chicago, New York, and Boston, targets the imposition of conditions on federally provided funds, specifically tying them to the administration's policies on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
According to the City and County of Denver, Mayor Mike Johnston highlighted the administration's threat to "strip cities of critical funding for everything from fighting fires to protecting concertgoers at Red Rocks from serious threats." He further added that these grants are unrelated to DEI initiatives and that the administration's demands represent politics encroaching where it doesn't belong.
Earlier this year witnessed the Trump Administration halting funding under the Securing Our Cities program essential for municipal security, but Denver's initial lawsuit led to the promised funds being restored. However, the Department of Homeland Security later indicated that subsequent reimbursements would hinge on compliance with DEI directives set by the Trump Administration, which Denver has refused to accept.
The move by the Trump Administration has garnered critical attention as Denver, along with its counterparts, represents a growing resistance to federal overtures that condition aid on adherence to specific political stances. These cities argue that such actions compromise their sovereignty and the fundamental services residents rely upon. "These grants have nothing to do with diversity, equity, and inclusion and everything to do with this administration’s goal of inserting politics where none belong," Mayor Mike Johnston told the City and County of Denver.
