The University of North Texas Police Department has recently marked a new chapter in its leadership structure with the promotion of Derek Wilson to the rank of Sergeant. Sgt. Wilson has dedicated eight years of service to the UNT Police and brings a total of 34 years of law enforcement acumen to his new role, per the University of North Texas Police Department.
His substantial experience is not the only attribute Wilson brings to the table; in his capacities, he also serves as the department's Peer Support Liaison, providing a critical support system for fellow officers. "He connects our employees with support, resources, and sometimes just a good listening ear," the University of North Texas Police Department stated, emphasizing the value even heroes can find in having support. The department's recognition comes at a time when the wellness of officers has never been more in the public eye; acknowledgment of such is a meaningful gesture for those who serve in uniform.
Sgt. Wilson's commitment to his colleagues and the community he serves remains a central theme in his new position. His role as Peer Support Liaison underpins the importance of mental health and emotional wellness within the force — acknowledging that those who protect and serve often carry burdens that require empathy and assistance.
