Durham residents, it's your time to weigh in on the future of your streets. The City of Durham is hosting an open house event where the public can view proposed 2-way traffic designs for Roxboro and Mangum streets. Scheduled for October 21 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 311 Dowd Street, this would be an opportunity for citizens to interact with Transportation staff and see what's in store for local roadways. As reported by the City of Durham, the event entrance is on Corporation Street and everyone interested is encouraged to participate.
Concerned with safety and accessibility, the designs will address traffic patterns, intersection redesigns, and curb adjustments. Proposed changes aim to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and bus riders, making navigation through these streets safer and more efficient. The open house will showcase plans for traffic flow from Markham Avenue to Lakewood Avenue, ensuring the original roadway footprint is altered minimally. Notably, the streets in question are under the jurisdiction of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, which is responsible for their upkeep.
Further details highlighted in the plans include intersection redesigns at key locations such as Markham and Five Points as well as improvements at Ramseur Street and the Mangum-Roxboro Connector. The City of Durham's alert also mentions planned curb adjustments at certain corners for the smooth maneuvering of large vehicles, like city buses and fire trucks.
The upcoming event marks a crucial phase before the final design stage set for 2026, with subsequent overhauls to traffic signals and signage. Envisaged by city planners, the construction is slotted in for 2027-2028.
