A morning blaze that erupted in a Cupertino strip mall has been contained, according to the Santa Clara County Fire Department. The fire, which was first reported at around 2:46 AM today, occurred in a structure located on the 10600 block of S. De Anza Blvd. Crews from the Cupertino fire station were among the first responders to confront the "fully involved structure fire," a social media post from the Santa Clara County Fire Department indicated.
After the intensity of the flames prompted a second alarm at 2:58 AM, firefighters from multiple units were called to the scene. The firefighters faced additional challenges, including life safety hazards and at least one explosion, as reported in a Facebook update by the Santa Clara County Fire Department. The blaze was brought under control by 4:24 AM, with three units within the mall being affected, but thankfully, nobody was injured in the incident.
Road closures have been implemented due to the the damaged buildings' proximity to S. De Anza Blvd., with two southbound lanes remaining closed. City building officials will inspect the site to determine when the thoroughfare can be safely reopened to the public. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and further details are pending.
A sizeable contingent of firefighting resources was deployed in response to the incident. This included "five fire engines, two fire trucks, two rescues, one Hazmat unit, two battalion chiefs, one safety officer, and one incident support officer," per the Santa Clara County Fire Department.
