Eden Prairie is enhancing its pedestrian safety measures with the installation of two new high-visibility beacons at key intersections. According to a report on the City's website yesterday, Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) are now operational at the intersections of Dell Road and Erin Bay, and Anderson Lakes Parkway and Amsden Way. These beacons are designed to catch drivers' attention with bright, flashing lights when pedestrians or bicyclists are looking to cross the street, increasing the chances drivers will stop.
These installations are part of a broader initiative to bolster pedestrian safety within the city. With a goal to keep adding two or three more RRFBs annually, the strategy seems to systematically reduce the risks that come with crossing busy streets. This project represents a collaborative effort among different City divisions, including the Police Department, which identified a state safety grant, and the Engineering Division, which applied for and secured the funding necessary. A cool $64,000 was allocated for these latest safety enhancements, as mentioned on the City's communication channels.
In other community news, the City of Eden Prairie reminds families of the upcoming Harvest to Halloween event. Set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Riley Lake Park, the free event promises an afternoon of pumpkin decorating, treat stations, and more. As per the same Eden Prairie announcement, attendees can look forward to food and beverages for purchase from a variety of vendors, with free shuttles available from designated parking lots.
Furthermore, Eden Prairie Schools is launching the Citizens in Our Schools program, designed to provide community members with a deep dive into the school district's inner workings. Anyone interested is encouraged to apply by Monday, Oct. 20, to participate in the program's seven themed sessions over the span of six months. Meanwhile, Fire Prevention Week commences Oct. 5 with this year's focus being the safe use of lithium-ion batteries to prevent fires. The City's website offers residents more information on this critical safety issue.
Recognizing years of dedicated service, the Police Department's Sgt. Tom Lowery has retired after a 25-year career and was honored with a Career Achievement Award. His notable tenure included roles as SWAT team leader and traffic supervisor. And, for those interested in civic involvement, upcoming City meetings are scheduled, including the Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources Commission on October 6, the City Council on October 7, and both the Flying Cloud Airport Advisory Commission and the Human Rights and Diversity Commission on October 9, as listed on the official City website.
