Edmond Electric’s lineworkers recently demonstrated their skills in a unique competition focused on safety, precision, and teamwork rather than traditional rodeo events. According to a release from the City of Edmond, the event was part of the Municipal Electric Systems of Oklahoma (MESO) Lineworker’s Rodeo, where participants performed routine utility tasks under judged conditions.
Lead Lineman Travis Matthews explained that the rodeo tests everyday field operations in a controlled environment. The Edmond team, including Matthews, had previously competed at the national American Public Power Association (APPA) Lineworkers Rodeo in California before returning to Oklahoma for the state-level event.
As per the same release, during the competition, lineworkers participated in several challenges, including the “Hurt Man Rescue,” a drill where participants practice rescuing a dummy to simulate an emergency response. These exercises focus on technical ability, safety practices, and adherence to proper procedures.
Matthews noted that the rodeos also help strengthen connections between municipal teams across the state, which is important for coordination during emergencies. The relationships built through these events contribute to the mutual aid system that supports cities during power outages and natural disasters.
Edmond Electric’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to safety, skill development, and cooperation within the broader public utility network.
