Edmond residents will vote on two sales tax renewals on November 18. Proposition 1 seeks to extend the existing one-cent general fund sales tax, which has been in place since 1977. About two-thirds of this revenue supports police and fire services, while the rest funds emergency warning systems, park maintenance, and community organizations, according to the City of Edmond’s official website.
Proposition 2 proposes renewing the ½-cent Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) sales tax, first approved in 2016. This tax funds capital projects such as road improvements planned for 2027 to 2037. Project recommendations will come from the citizen-led Capital Improvement Projects Advisory Board, based on public input, pavement assessments, and traffic data. All final road projects would require City Council approval.
If approved, the overall sales tax rate will remain at 8.25 percent—4.5 percent for the state and 3.75 percent for Edmond. City officials note that sales tax is the city’s main funding source for services like police, fire, and road maintenance, since property tax cannot be used for these purposes in Oklahoma.
Voters can confirm registration or track absentee ballots through the Oklahoma State Election Board’s OK Voter Portal at okvoterportal.okelections.gov. Early voting is available November 13 and 14 at the Oklahoma County Election Board Office. Absentee ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on Election Day. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on November 18.
